Akita Museum of Modern Art – About

About the Museum

Akita Museum of Modern Art serves as a vital center for art, culture, and tourism, fostering a profound connection between people and the enriching world of modern and contemporary art.

Established in April 1994, it stands as a cultural cornerstone alongside Akita Furusato Village. The Museum is dedicated to the collection, research, and exhibition of artworks historically tied to the Akita region. This includes the notable “Akita Ranga” (Western-style painting of Akita), a distinctive genre created by the local lords and samurai during the Edo period.

Through its extensive research and collections, the Museum organizes insightful exhibitions, educational programs, and public outreach activities, inviting visitors to experience the depth and diversity of artistic expression rooted in Akita.

The “Akita Ranga” painting style

Akita Ranga is a distinctive genre of Western-style painting created by Akita clan samurai, notably Odano Naotake, during the Edo period. These paintings are characterized by the use of Western techniques, such as linear perspective and chiaroscuro (shading). Akita Ranga remains a valuable cultural heritage today, illustrating the significant East-West cultural exchange that occurred during the Edo era.

Our Collection

The Museum inherited art collections previously held by the Akita Prefectural Museum. Our collection and exhibitions focus primarily on works associated with the Akita region, while also including artworks that illustrate both domestic and international trends in modern and contemporary art.

A selection of our sculpture collection is displayed in the outdoor areas, offering visitors the opportunity to enjoy the artworks in harmony with the rich surrounding natural environment.
